Energy Cost Guide exists to answer one question clearly: what does electricity — and going solar — actually cost where I live? Energy pricing varies enormously by state and city, so we turn public data into plain, comparable estimates for your electric bill and your solar payback.

Our editorial & research team

Energy Cost Guide is researched and written by the EPG Digital Editorial Team. Our editorial team compiles pricing from public data sources and hands-on testing, then reviews every guide for accuracy before it is published and on each update.

We build every estimate from public sources — including U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) residential electricity prices and typical household usage — and we combine them with local population and housing data so each city page reflects real local conditions, not a copy-paste template. Every guide is reviewed for accuracy before publishing and again whenever the underlying data changes.

How our numbers are built

We explain each formula and data source on our methodology page. Estimates are just that — estimates — and we say so plainly; your real bill or solar quote depends on your home, usage and installer.
